Stephen Harding
My direct involvement with the arts began when I worked as Assistant to Jose Ferez at the October Gallery, London, 1989-1992.
During this time I set up a gallery for Thomas Kettle's of Neal Street, London and curated several shows.
I was a founding member of Salon des Arts, Palace Gate, London run by Danielle Dodds where I helped set up soirees and exhibitions. I also exhibited my own work, which included paintings and performance.
Studios
1990-1992 Archway in London, Painting and working with found objects.
1992 Auchencairn in Galloway. Painting with found materials
1993-1996 Symondsbury nr. Bridport in Dorset. At the time there was a group of artists often exhibiting at The Old Rectory Symondsbury. During this period I was developing my arts practice producing paintings, sculptures, installations, Mail Art and increasingly informal performance.
(The Mail Art projects were under the name of “Fluxus Continum” and Fluxus Nexus”).
I participated in several shows and started to develop the idea of informal performance.
1996 -1999 I attended Dartington College of Arts studying Visual Performance where I experimented with Radio, Video and sound Installations. Central to my performance work was chance and random improvised actions interwoven into a prepared structure.
Alongside of my visual performance studies I was a regular participant of improvised music, with Sam Richards and performed with Patrick Wray, Asim Butt.
During my 3rd year I spent 6 weeks in Vire, France as Artist in Residence making on site video performances.
During a College trip to Documenta X, Kassel we traveled on to Posnan, Poland where we spent 2 weeks at the University making work and performances.
After graduating I started working as a self employed Yoga Teacher while running a home and bringing up my young son
In 2006, with three friends I set up the Surf Hams Film Collective (SHFC). There have been 6 annual film festivals in Aveton Gifford, making films and inviting submissions of 5 minute films from community members and invited film makers/ artists. These included Malcolm le Grice, Pauline Amos, Dave Hasell and Mark Jenkin.
I am interested in the multi screen screening of films in galleries and spaces which enable the viewer to have an immersive experience. Examples of this would be the work of Joan Jonas, Goat Island, Julian Isaac, Bill Viola and Laurie Anderson who integrate the staging of their work with the exhibition place.
The films I am making have an element of biography, documentary, comedy and have included live performance alongside the film as an integral part of the piece.
I want to further my exploration of making live performance in formal settings (galleries and theatres). I want to delve into conventions, relationships, entertainment and politics with performance art, happenings, theatre, film, sound, text and spoken word.
